Sustainability and commitment to the planet

Our guests are both witnesses and participants

At the Hotel Waya Guajira, we are committed to minimizing our carbon footprint in our activities and energy supply. Our guests are both witnesses and participants as we have a water-saving system in the bathrooms. We are also sustainable and we create employment for local people. We generate energy with solar panels for continuous use. If you are interested in accommodation where you can work as a volunteer, this is the place for you. We also offer bird-watching with protected species in 80% of the flora and fauna conservation area that the hotel encompasses.

Sustainability

The sale of handcrafts to our guests has a positive impact on 160 families. Also, 90% of our employees are local, 89% of them sustain their homes and 48% are women.

Volunteering

One proactive way to discover Guajira is to travel for the purpose of doing volunteer work to provide vulnerable communities with resources resulting from recycling, donations or environmental care campaigns.

Donations

Donations may include clothing, electrical and electronic devices, production tools for artisan creations or books that aid education that runs in parallel with the indigenous culture of the communities.

Crafts

One of the customs of the Wayuu culture is the “weavers network”. At the hotel, we have a shop that promotes their exclusive, hand-made creations using ancestral techniques so that you can take home a unique souvenir. With this project, we help ensure optimal living conditions for weavers.

Local products

These include the craftwork displayed in our hotel, the procurement of internal services and the products that come from indigenous and Afro-descendant entrepreneurs. They provide over half of the raw materials, with over 11,500 million pesos promoting local business.

Sustainable infrastructure and design

Our infrastructure is such that we save 15% of energy with solar panels and we save 50% of water in irrigating plants and bathroom sanitation. As a result of these and other sustainable practices, we are LEED-certified and we have a Columbian environmental certificate.

Environmental focus

Together with the specific practices we carry out at the hotel, we provide others in the vicinity to seal our commitment to the planet and instruct others about the urgency of recycling and the proper use of natural resources.
