Electrical and electronic devices
In Colombia, the generation of electronic waste, also known as e-waste, reached 34,000 metric tons in 2021. During this year, Colombia was positioned as one of the largest generators of e-waste in Latin America and the Caribbean (Statista Research Deparment Magazine).
Caring for the environment, the protection of biodiversity and our planet, involves efforts and commitments not only from governments, but also from companies and civil society.
In terms of waste disposal there are established standards for the recycling of certain types of materials that may be hazardous after they have completed their useful life. Electrical and electronic waste are harmful to human health and the environment because they contain heavy metals and organic pollutants and others used in their manufacture, for example: lead, cadmium, arsenic, cobalt, selenium, chromium, mercury.
It is necessary to avoid that after the useful life of these devices, they do not end up on the ground in the open air or in water bodies.
The norms established by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, indicate that these devices must be recycled in special bins, to take them then to specific points arranged in the cities according to the norms established by the government, at least here in Colombia.
There are companies and Foundations that participate in the circular economy market, these organizations reincorporate this waste as raw material for the manufacture of other products.
